Commercial Trading, Logistics & Risk Management
Evaluating energy opportunities across the complete commercial chain.
Goura's commercial activities have developed from more than two decades of experience in international crude oil trading, energy transactions, logistics, investment evaluation, and strategic risk management.

The Group approaches commercial opportunities by looking beyond headline prices and individual transaction terms. Market conditions, transportation requirements, infrastructure, contractual structures, operational constraints, financing considerations, and overall transaction economics are evaluated together to determine whether an opportunity can generate sustainable value.
This integrated approach enables Goura to identify commercially attractive opportunities, assess their practical feasibility, structure transactions, and make informed decisions on when to proceed — and when the underlying economics do not justify the associated risks.

Commercial Discipline
Looking beyond the headline price.
Goura's commercial philosophy is based on evaluating the complete transaction economics, rather than relying on a single commercial indicator.
An apparently attractive purchase price or contractual term may not translate into an attractive transaction once transportation, storage, handling, infrastructure constraints, financing, timing, operational requirements, and other associated costs are considered.
For this reason, Goura evaluates opportunities across the complete commercial chain, combining market intelligence, technical assessment, logistics analysis, contractual considerations, and financial evaluation before reaching an investment or transaction decision.
This approach is designed to identify both value-creating opportunities and hidden risks, supporting disciplined decision-making throughout the transaction lifecycle.
Featured Case Study
Caspian crude export route evaluation
During the evaluation of a proposed long-term crude oil supply agreement with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Goura undertook a comprehensive technical, logistical, and commercial assessment of the available export routes for transporting Caspian crude oil to international markets.
The proposed transaction included a commercial discount of approximately US$35 per metric tonne, initially making the opportunity appear commercially attractive.
Rather than assessing the proposal solely on the purchase price, Goura evaluated the complete export value chain to determine whether the apparent price advantage could be retained after transportation, handling, storage, infrastructure, and other logistical costs.
- Existing pipeline infrastructure connecting Baku with Black Sea export terminals.
- Pipeline capacity, third-party access, and contractual availability.
- Marine transportation across the Caspian Sea.
- Navigation through the Volga River and the Volga–Don Canal system.
- Lock dimensions, seasonal operating restrictions, draft limitations, and transit times.
- The effect of shallow river depths on barge capacity and transportation efficiency.
- Intermediate cargo handling and storage requirements.
- Export logistics through the Port of Novorossiysk.
- Rail transportation from Baku to the Black Sea terminals of Supsa and Batumi.
The rail option was also evaluated in detail. Available train movements were limited to consignments of approximately 3,000 tonnes per train, requiring multiple shipments to assemble commercially viable export cargoes. The assessment also considered transit security, storage requirements, scheduling constraints, and the operational complexity of consolidating sufficient volumes for loading onto ocean-going tankers.
Following completion of the technical, logistical, and commercial assessment, Goura concluded that the cumulative costs associated with transportation, cargo handling, storage, operational constraints, and transit inefficiencies would exceed the financial benefit created by the proposed purchase discount. Based on this integrated evaluation, the opportunity was not pursued.
The case illustrates Goura's approach to complex international energy transactions: integrating technical expertise, logistics analysis, commercial evaluation, and financial assessment before committing resources or capital.
An attractive price does not necessarily represent an attractive opportunity; true value must be assessed across the entire commercial chain.
